Significance of Consumer Protection
Consumer protection laws are designed to ensure that business competition is fair and that the flow of information in the marketplace is free. These laws are also created to prevent businesses from engaging in fraud or specified unfair practices to gain advantage over competitors. Likewise, these regulations provide additional protection for the weak and for those unable to take care of themselves.
The UK is bound by the consumer protection directives of the European Union, in which issues are dealt with when complaints are made to the Director-General of Fair Trade. The Office of Fair Trading will investigate, impose an injunction, or take the matter to litigation, if necessary.
Consumers are then protected from a wide range of issues, such as fraud, misrepresentation, privacy rights, product liability, unfair business practices, and other consumer and business interactions. In the UK alone, the Office of Fair Trading acts as the official consumer watchdog with a responsibility to make markets work well for consumers. This imposes laws that deal with credit repair, debt repair, product safety, service and sales contracts, bill collector regulation, pricing, utility turnoffs, personal loans that may lead to bankruptcy, and many more.
